Limits of faking

It is tempting to think that, with modern tools, anything can be faked. That is not quite true. Faking has real costs and real limits, and knowing where they are helps you tell a serious impersonation from a cheap one.

What is easy to fake now

With little effort, anyone can produce:

  • a profile photo — including a face that does not exist;
  • text in any style, in any language;
  • a single image or short video clip;
  • a cloned voice from a few seconds of audio.

So a convincing-looking message, picture or voice note proves almost nothing on its own.

What is still hard to fake

The difficulty grows quickly as you ask for more:

  1. A long, consistent history. Years of ordinary activity — posts, photos, friends, mundane details that all agree with each other — is enormously expensive to fabricate. Fakes are almost always thin and recent.

  2. Live, unscripted interaction. Real-time conversation, a spontaneous video call, an unexpected question — these are far harder to fake than a recorded clip. Ask for something the faker could not prepare in advance.

  3. Independent confirmation. A fake can control its own channel, but not several unrelated ones. Confirmation from sources the faker does not control is hard to forge.

  4. Cryptographic identity. Signed messages, verified keys and similar mechanisms can’t be faked without stealing the secret key. Where they are available, they are the strongest proof of all.

  5. Physical and legal reality. Real bank accounts, real documents checked against official registers, real meetings in person — faking these crosses from “effort” into “crime”, which raises the cost and the risk for the faker dramatically.

The practical takeaway

You can’t tell truth from fake by how real something looks — appearance is the cheapest thing to fake. You tell them apart by how expensive the fake would be: depth of history, live interaction, independent confirmation, and cryptographic or legal proof.
